Language Factory, Infoxchange's community translating and interpreting enterprise, has given many recent migrants and public housing residents employment and education opportunities. As well as undertaking interpreting tasks on a needs basis, Language Factory is connecting people to formal training and enhancing the career prospects of low income earners.
Kumlachew Bisrat is a project officer at Infoxchange who also does Amharic community interpreting work with Language Factory. "Recently, Language Factory helped me to find a scholarship called the 'New Interpreters Project’, a two day workshop organised by NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters)," Kumlachew says. "This is preparing me for a test to be an accredited interpreter/translator, and soon I will be among the first group of accredited interpreters/translators in my native language."
